To have and to hold

We were studying in Hebrews 10 this morning and we were looking at the five "let us" statements. I mentioned that the first two have to do with our relationship with God while the next three have to do with our relationship one to another. As our discussion continued we mentioned that marriage is a picture of our relationship with God. Someone then pointed out that in the first of the "let us" statements we have the verb "to have" while in the second we have the verb "to hold". This once again confirms that the marriage relationship is a picture of our relationship with God.

In the "let us" statements we are told to encourage one another, spur one another on to good works, and to gather together. One of the joys of the coming together and encouraging one another is the discoveries that we can make together in God's word. Now don't get me wrong. It is important that we hold to the truth and not to share our prejudges or ingnorances but when we study together with our hearts searching God's word for His truth that we can learn new things together. So it was this morning once again.

One of the other "let us" statements is to draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.

I believe it is significant that it is listed first. Before we can do the other "let us" statements, we must do this one. Unless we are inwardly cleansed and have a pure heart and clean conscience, we are useless and helpless. Drawing near to God is seeking Him with all our strength through praise, prayer, reading of the Bible, His Word, and worshipping along with other believers.

Very good Bible study. Would love to be there with you when you meet.
