Who or What?

I once heard a preacher say, "More than important than who God is, is what He does." I immediately reacted to that statement and after that I listened critically to him because his theology was suspect at best. The Ark represents who God is while the mercy seat what God does. There would not be a mercy seat without the Ark. Who God is determines what He does not the other way around.

I get the feelling that you are correct. When God tells Moses his name in Exodus 3:14 he doesn't tell him "I am what I do", but rather God's sole identity to Moses is that "I Am that I Am". God is God, and there is nothing to which his identity as God can be compared to. Limiting the identity of God to actions seems disrespectful to me.

Very well put Kent... and I also completely agree. It seems to me that when people stress what God does over who he is it leads to a man-centered theology, since we are often the recipients of what he does. But when you recognize what he does comes from who he is, it leads to God glorifying worship.

My word verification was "olocha". That's cool!

You are right Kent. I never though about it as being disrespectful but it is true. If I only loved my wife for what she did then I would be disrespectful of her and would not really love her.
By the way, I love the picture.
